Zalene was a graduate of Nyack College in Nyack, New York and also from Free Will Baptist Bible College in Nashville Tennessee. She was commissioned to India in 1948 as a Free Will Baptist missionary and from 1951-1953 served as resident supervisor of Hart Cottage at Dr. Graham's Homes in Kalimpong, India. Upon returning to the United States in 1953, she worked briefly at a children's home in Pennsylvania and then at the Free Will Baptist Children's Home in Middlesex, North Carolina. She married Marine Lieutenant Robert "Bob" Franklin Breeden at the Edgemont Free Will Baptist Church (her home church) in Durham, North Carolina on November 27, 1954. Bob changed over to the US Army with the rank of Captain and served in the military until his retirement in 1968. From 1968 until her death in 2004, they served in full-time pastorates of Free Will Baptist churches in North Carolina, New Hampshire, Maine, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Maryland and Virginia.

They adopted four children as follows: Wade Franklin (Jacksonville, NC in 1956); Kenneth Wayne (Anchorage, Alaska in 1961), Rebecca Darlene (Anchorage, Alaska, 1962) and Jonathan Russell (Fort Bragg, North Carolina 1967).

Obituary - Zalene Lloyd Breeden, 88, of Buena Vista, died Tuesday, December 14, 2004 at her residence. She was born June 22, 1916 in Durham, NC, daughter of the late Wade and Ida Thompson Lloyd. She was a devoted wife, mother, homemaker and pastor's wife. Surviving with her husband, Rev. Robert Franklin Breeden, with whom she celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on November 27, 2004 are her children: Frank Breeden and wife, Terri of Brentwood, TN; Kenneth Breeden of Schofield, WI; Rebecca Wentworth and husband, Randal of Buena Vista; and Russ Breeden of Lynchburg; seven grandchildren; a brother, Robert Lloyd of Wilmington, NC. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 17, 2004 at the Lomax Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bill Steele, Rev. Steven Amburgey and Rev. Lester Horton officiating. Burial will follow in the Green Hill Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends on Thursday from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Lomax Funeral Home.
