Wilborn Davis Boyd, 87, of Fruitland Park, Fla., died Friday, Aug. 7, 2009. He was born Jan. 11, 1922 in Marion, Ky. He moved with his wife to Fruitland Park from Virginia Beach, Va., in 1988 and attended Calvary Baptist Church of Fruitland Park. He was a Master Mason at Bayside Masonic Lodge No. 218 in Virginia Beach, Va., since 1989. He was an active member of the U.S.N. Armed Guard World War II Veterans Association. Wilborn enlisted in the United States Navy Nov. 12, 1942 and proudly serviced 30 years. His Naval career included duty on nine ships, duty at the Naval Ordnance Test Station in China Lake, Calif., from 1950-52 and recruiting duty in Lynchburg, Va., from 1959-62. He retired from the Navy Oct. 1, 1972 as a Senior Chief Petty Officer (Gunner's Mate). After military retirement, he was employed by the Virginia State Air Pollution Control Board until Feb. 1, 1987, and retired as a Senior Air Quality Control Technician. He was a strong and caring man devoted to his family and a friend to many. He was happily married for 57 years to Yvonne Tower Boyd, recently deceased. He is survived by his two sons, Douglas and Diane Boyd and David and Donna Boyd; three daughters, Joyce and David Smith, Rosemary Boyd and Patricia Boyd; four grandchildren, Michael Boyd, Jamie Manis, Shawn Langley and Charles McMahon; six great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Matthew, Christina, Willow, Brooke and Kaylyn. A viewing will be held at Beyers Funeral Home, Leesburg on Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009 from 4-8 p.m. with a viewing on Friday, Aug. 14, 2009 at 10 a.m. and memorial service at 11 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, Fruitland Park with Pastor Robert Mullis officiating. Interment will be held at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla., with military honors conducted by Lake Co. War Veterans Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: U.S.N. Armed Guard World War II Veterans Association, 115 Wall Creek Drive, Rolesville, NC 27571; or Shriners Hospital for Children, Office of Development, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
