Mrs. Etta M. Carrick, of Oakland, a former resident of St. Helena, passed away in a San Jose hospital Thursday night of last week from injuries received in an automobile accident that day near Warm Springs. The automobile in which Mrs. Carrick was riding with Mrs. Martha Thoms, also of Oakland, collided head-on with another machine. The two ladies were en route to a bridge party at Saratoga when the accident occurred.
About twelve years ago the Carricks purchased about twenty acres, formerly part of the Edge Hill property, on Sulphur Springs avenue near St. Helena and converted a large stone wine cellar on the property into an attractive country home. After the death of Mr. Carrick in San Francisco in 1926, Mrs. Carrick continued to make her home here for some time and then sold the place to Lloyd Crellin. She returned to Oakland to reside and recently had made her home at the Oakland Women's City Club.
Deceased was a very charming lady and her friends here will regret to learn of her tragic death. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Jay W. Cook, Mrs. Howard Gill and Mrs. Kenneth Verling, the latter having taught in the St. Helena grammar school in 1927. She also leaves one brother, D. A. Mendenhall, of Palo Alto. She was a native of California.
The funeral was held last Saturday afternoon in San Francisco."
