The date of birth for John is way before the marriage of Michael & Susannah Dunning. This has always puzzled me. Michael had lost his first wife on May 5, 1829. Then, he marries Susannah on August 29, 1829. That's only three months. Since Michael already had children and a new born, this leads me to think he married a widow with a child to help raise his children. If this is not the case, then, John would be illegitimate. More research is needed to confirm this.

Per his death certificate, he died in the year 1902. Therefore, the year of death is cut wrong on his tombstone. In addition, his parents are listed as Michael Dunning and Susan Turner.

Early family history indicates all the children of Michael and Susan were born in the old Dunning Homestead in Cotton Township. This homestead was about a mile down Red Hog Pike going east from Highway 250.
