DNA (yDNA) test results from Michael's 3rd Great Grandson, Mark Evan Dunning, confirms a relationship to the Dunning family of Orange County, New York. The progenitor of this family was Theophilus Dunning, who was granted land in Salem, Massachusetts in 1642.
Refined yDNA test results indicate descendants of Michael Dunning, David Dunning (Memorial ID: 167243793), and John Dunning (Memorial ID: 89959480) test positive for SNP I-FT356041. All are confirmed descendants of James Dunning (Michael, Benjamin, Theophilus Dunning) of Goshen, Orange County, New York. https://www.familytreedna.com/public/dunning?iframe=ycolorized
Further research of census records suggests he is the son of Benjamin Dunning, who was the youngest son of James Dunning and was born about 1755 in probably Goshen, Orange County, New York. Benjamin Dunning later settled in Minisink, Orange, County, New York.
James Dunning had four other sons: David, Timothy, James, and Ebenezer. From the genealogy, published in The Colorado Genealogist dated April 1944, there could be another son and four unknown daughters.
During the War of 1812, he was mustered in as Private in Captain John Dunning's Company, Colonel Michael Smith's Regiment. This company embraced men from both Orange and Ulster Counties in New York. (Orange County History, p. 91)
