Thursday, February 9, 1967

FREE - John I. Free, son of John and Emily Free, was born near Iconium, Iowa, April 13, 1878, and passed away peacefully at his home in Russell Sunday, Jan. 29, 1967 at the age of 88 years, nine months and 16 days.

On Nov. 13, 1900, he was united in marriage to Myrtle Morlan and they established their home on a farm in Appanoose County. Here, two daughters were born, Celeste and Marie.

For the greater part of 40 years John was actively engaged in farming in Appanoose, Wayne and Lucas counties, moving to Russell in 1941, which has since been his home.

He was a great lover of nature and especially interested in sports, always keeping well posted on the outcome of athletic contests, both local and national.

As a young man he was converted and united with the New Providence Baptist church at Confidence, later transferring to the Cambria Baptist church.

Survivors, besides his wife Myrtle are his two daughters, Mrs. Tom Marmon of Big Rapids, Mich., and Mrs. John Woodman of Russell, four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Pearl Free of Albia, many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were at the Woodman Funeral Home in Russell Tuesday, Jan. 31. Clergymen were the Rev. Roy Jones of Cambria and the Rev. Glenn E. Saunders of Russell. Burial was in the Confidence cemetery.
