Son of John Meckes and Elizabeth Greenzweig. Henry was baptized 26 Jul 1846 at Salem Church, Gilbert, Monroe Co., Pennsylvania; sponsored by George Christman and hiw wife, Susanna.

Henry was a Civil War veteran, enlisting in Company C (later Company A), 11th Penna. Cavalry, as a private (teamster) on 9 March 1864 at Philadelphia, PA, for a tour of duty of 3 years (from Franklin Township, Carbon Co.) It was recorded that his eyes were hazel, hair - brown, complexion - dark, and height - 5 feet 7 inches. He was absent due to sickness in July and August of 1864 and then served on detached duty at Jones Neck, Virginia from 24 September 1864 to March 1865. He mustered out of the army on 13 August 1865 at Richmond, Virginia. He received $180 of a promised $300 bounty, payment being stopped for one revolver and a saber and belt that had been supplied by the government and probably not turned in.

Henry married Susanna Eckhart (daughter of Adam Eckhart and Henrietta Beer) in April 1870, by whom he had 1) Ella Amanda Meckes b. 1871 and 2) Tillilah "Matilda" Catherine Meckes b. 1871

After Henry's death, his wife, Susanna (nee Eckhart) married a Mr. Frey and then, Charles H. Christman. In 1880 Susanah Frey, age 23 a widow, was living in South Kidder Twp., Carbon Co., PA, in the household of her married brother, Paul Eckhart, age 29 a hotel keeper, and his wife, Catharine Eckhart age 27, and their two children; daughter Annie E. Eckhart age 3, and son William M. Eckhart age 1. Also listed in the same household was Susanna's unmarried brother, Edwin Eckhart age 17.
