Edward Baker was born in Wedmore, Somersetshire, England, on August 17, 1834, and was one of a family of three boys and four girls. A brother Robert in Australia and a sister in England are the only two surviving.
Mr. Baker came to America when he was 16, coming across a sailing vessel. After working for some years as a farmer in New York State, he came west to cascade in Dubuque County, Iowa, where he met Ellen T. Ellis, who became his life partner. Mrs. Ellis is a sister of George Ellis of Ida Grove and John Ellis of Farley, Iowa.
Mr. and Mrs. Baker were married on March 27, 1859, at Cascade, Iowa. By the Reverend Holiday, three daughters were born to this happy union, Mrs. Jay B. Cooper of South Dakota, Mrs. William Speaker of Schaller, and Nellie Baker, who lives at home.
Ed Baker served throughout the Civil War in the 21st Iowa and was in the memorable siege of Vicksburg and the other significant battles. At the close of the war, he received an honorable discharge and returned to Iowa, where he farmed into Dubuque County until 1876 when they came to Ida County. They are located in Blaine Twp. And for 88 years, they lived on the old homestead until two years ago when health made it necessary for them to move to Arthur.
In their great sorrow, the widow and children left behind have all sympathy. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 1:30, with the Grand Army veterans in charge and Reverend Howe conducting the service.
