Joseph H Smith Jr was reared in North Carolina until the age of 13 when he went to Tenn and remained for 6 yrs. Returning to his father home until 1851 when they moved to Warren Co Tenn. When they came to Arkansas they settled at Piney Point near Gobbler. He settled in Carroll Co, but the second yr, in the expedition with Capt. Meadows, he crossed the plains to California, reaching there after 5 months. Engaging in Mining, he continued until 1855 when he returned home by way of Panama, Aspinwall and New Orleans. The venture proved successful and after returning he purchased a farm adjoinging some land he owned in Osage Township. Here he located and resided until 1886, when he removed to his present home in Conner, Ark, Liberty township. Mr Smith was first married to Rachel Phillips on Aug. 14,1855, a native of Overton Co Tenn. She died 4 weeks after their marriage in Sept 1855 and he then married Ingober B Poteet also a native of Overton Co Tenn on May 11, 1856. In Sept, 1861 he enlisted in the Confederate Army, Co. A, HARRELL'S Arkansas Cavalry - CSA. He and his wife were members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He was also a charter member of Osage Lodge No. 219, A. F. & A. M. and is a Master Mason. Joseph Smith had been a Blacksmith, a cattle drover, a cattle merchant and a farmer.
