RICHARD NEWTON STARTZMAN died Sunday afternoon at his home, 837 Concord Street, aged 57 years, 9 months and 11 days. Although he had been n failing health for a number of years his death came rather suddenly as Mr. Startzman was in his usual place on Friday last as manager of the Herald-Mail job printing department. His passing came as a shock to his many friends and acquaintances.
Mr. Startzman had been connected with the newspaper and printing business in Hagerstown for the past 42 years. He started with the Daily News as paper carrier and printer's "devil" on March 20, 1893. In the spring of 1901 he accepted a position with the Morning Herald. On October 1, 1923, he was appointede manager of the Herald-Mail job printing department, holding this position up to the time of his death.
Mr. Startzman was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Valley Lodge, Knights of Pythias, and a charter member of Hagerstown Typographical Union No. 108.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nellie F. Startzman; son, Vernon N., and daughters, E. Cornelia and Rosalie, all at home; brothers, Charles C., and Max W., Hagerstown; Paul R., Washington, DC; sisters, Mrs. Laura V. Martin, Mrs. Clara E. Hendry, and Miss Mary E. Startzman, Hagerstown.
Funeral services were held at the home; interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
