Revolutionary War Soldier who served as a Private in the 4th Massachusetts regiment, enlisted in 1780. Married Mary Wilbur. Father of Mary, Caleb, Jr., Rebecca, Charlotte, Joshua, Electa, Relief, Lydia, and Edith. Served in Col. William Shepard's regiment. He was a farmer. He was the son of Huldah (Cudworth) Bates and Benjamin Bates. His grave was located and marked by the Ann Gridley chapter of the DAR May 30, 1912. Caleb was killed by a train 2 years after the train was installed in Hilldale
