He was born April 21, 1944, in Morrilton, to the late Burl and Minnie (Starkey) Atkinson.
He took pride in serving his country by enlisting in the U.S. Army at the age of 17. He touched many people's lives through his charm and passionate love of music.
He met the love of his life in 1983. Gary and Marilyn celebrated 25 years of marriage this past November and made a life together in Conway, close to their families.
Gary had many skills including: transmission repair, tool inventor and musical artist. His most important role was as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was always happiest sharing his love of music with those around him, especially teaching music to his grandkids. Some of Gary's heroes were Waylon Jennings, Carl Perkins, and Marty Robbins. Gary was inspired on a trip to Missouri and wrote a beautiful, spiritual song called "The View" which he recorded on his last CD along with other gospel songs that meant so much to him.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Atkinson; children, Gary Carroll Atkinson, Sheila Sane, Donnie Atkinson, Stormy Fairweather, all of Missouri, April Lafferty of Kansas, Marisia Geraci and Johnnie "Boo" Thomas, both of Conway; 14 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Carrol Ed Atkinson and Steve Atkinson, both of Houston, AR; and by two sisters, Sandra Mabry of Houston, AR, and Sharon Buckner of Mayflower.
