Rebecca Cunningham was born in Hardy Co, VA (now WV), the only natural child of Isaac Cunningham (1778–1842) and his wife Sarah "Sally" Harness (1783–1845). The Cunningham family moved to Clark Co, KY in 1802.

Rebecca was an only child but was not reared like one - her parents raised a lrge extended family including the orphaned son of his sister Nancy, George Grimes; his sister Elizabeth Scott's 5 children, his wife's twin sister Hannah Hull's 3 children, and a boy named Thos. Landrum (1810-1862), whom they adopted and renamed Thos. Cunningham.

Rebecca was married 17 Jun 1817 to Isaac Van Meter (1794–1854). He, too, came from Hardy County, VA and was her father's business partner.

Isaac & Rebecca were the parents of a houseful of children who grew to adulthood, and others lost in infancy or childhood.
