Alpha was the daughter of Alfred & Elizabeth "Lizzie" Naylor Preston. A native of Garrard County, Kentucky, her family moved to Lexington, Kentucky and she was raised to adulthood, in that city. She married Carl Y. Hisle and the couple were the parents of a son, Robert Lee Hisle. The marriage was of a short duration and ended in divorce.
When some of her siblings moved to Missouri, Alpha and her son joined them. She married Frederick W. Piercefield. He was the son of James Frederick Piercefield and the former husband of Ruby W. Smith Piercefield.
