Charles Edwin Black was born in Jul 1844 in Missouri. He was the fourth of six living children of Andrew Winkel-Black and Stacy Simmons Wheeler. In 1853 Charles moved with his family to Solano County, California, where Charles became a farmer. There he met and married Mollie Fenley on 05 Oct 1875. Mollie died giving birth to their only child, a daughter, on 19 Nov 1877. Charles married Mary Edith Rose on 26 Oct 1878 in Fairfield, Solano County, California, and together they had eight living children.


In the late1880's Charles and his family moved to a homestead in Wheeler County, Oregon, near the town of Fossil. Around 1908 Charles moved his family to Portland, Oregon, in order to get better medical care for his youngest son. On 26 May 1913 Charles was killed in an accident when his horse-team ran away and slammed the delivery wagon he was driving into a pole.
