Andrew Winkel-Black was born on 26 Apr 1813 in Monroe County, West Virginia. He was the first-born son of John W. Winkelblack and Sarah Meyers. In 1817 he moved with his family to the area of Bath County, Kentucky. About 1833 he married Stacy Simmons Wheeler in Kentucky, and they had six living children.

In 1838 Andrew and Stacy moved to Buchanan County, Missouri, along with Andrew's parents and their family. They remained in Missouri for about fifteen years, and then in 1853 they moved to Solano County, California, where Andrew was a farmer. In July 1891, Andrew and Stacy moved to the home of their son, Charles E. Black, near Fossil, Oregon, and it was there that Andrew died of heart failure at the age of 80 on 03 Jan 1894. He was laid to rest in the Fossil Masonic Cemetery on 05 Jan 1894 beside his wife Stacy, who died two years earlier.

Died on Wednesday, Jan 3, 1894, at the residence of his son C.E. Black near Fossil, Andrew W. Black, of heart failure. Deceased was born in Virginia on April 26, 1813; moved to Kentucky, then to Mo., and thence to California in 1853. He lived in the Golden State until July, 1891, when he came to Fossil to make his home with his son here. Friday his remains were laid to rest in the Masonic cemetery beside the grave of his wife, who died here in September, 1892. He leaves four sons, one each in Oregon, California, Arizona, and Colorado, and a daughter in California.
