Martin was the 2nd of 11 children (2nd son) born of Ezra Crane and his wife Prudence Leigh. Martin's siblings were: James (b. 1761), Jeremiah (b. 1766), Belden, Ezra, Simeon (b. 1773), Asa, Aaron, Calvin, Prudence, and William (b. 1782).

In 1781, at or about the age of 17 years, Martin emigrated to New Haven, Addison County, Vermont from Salisbury, Litchfield County, Connecticut.

Martin married Rachel Thompson (1767-1840) by whom he had 9 children (4 sons and 5 daughters): Polly (1788-1849), Milton (1791-1875), Melinda (1794-1855), Celia (1795-1875), Norman (b. 1799), Belden (1802-1864), Horace (b. 1804), Aurelia (b. 1806), and Elvira (Alvira) Rachel (1808-1890).
