Lawrence Gorter, 80, Pipestone, died Wednesday, November 2, 2005 at Good Samaritan Communities of Pipestone.

Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 4 at Pipestone Christian Reformed Church in Pipestone, with Rev. Brad Meinders officiating.

Casket bearers were Chris, Corey and Cassidy Punt, Ross Heilman, Rick, Jim and Don Gorter.

Interment was in Old Woodlawn Cemetery.

Military rites were provided by Michael Boock American Legion Post #6 and the VFW Post #3814.

Lawrence was born on Aug. 3, 1925 to John and Alice (Holtrop) Gorter in Doon, Iowa. He was raised on a farm near Doon and attended country school. In 1939 he moved with his family to Rock Rapids, Iowa. He continued to help his father on the farm and also other farmers. During the winter months he was employed at John Morrell.

On Sept. 1, 1950 he entered the U.S. Army and served in Colorado Springs, Colo. and Alaska, during the Korean War. After his discharge on July 24, 1952 he returned to the Rock Rapids area.

He married Helen Meyer on Nov. 17, 1953 in Pipestone. Following their marriage they moved to Luverne in 1954 where they farmed. In 1966 they moved to a farm in Eden Township of Pipestone County, near Jasper. They continued to farm there until their retirement in 1989 when they moved into Pipestone.

In 1993 Lawrence was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease. In January 1999 he became a resident of the Good Samaritan Communities of Pipestone.

He was a member of the Christian Reformed Church in Pipestone where he served on the consistory and on the building committee.

He is survived by his wife, Helen, Pipestone; five children, Kathy (Gary) Punt, Pipestone; Rick (Kim) Gorter, Dayton; Lori (Rev. David) Heilman, Orange City, Iowa; Jim (Jan) Gorter, Spring Branch, Texas and Don (Sonja) Gorter, Shakopee; five grandsons; eight granddaughters; one great-granddaughter;

Four brothers, Fred (Tena) Gorter, Brandon, S.D.; Ed (Kathy) Gorter, Midland Park, N.J.; Clarence (Dee) Gorter, and Jerald (Bonnie) Gorter, all of Sioux Falls, S.D. and two sisters, Annie Kramer, Brandon and Albertha Smidstra, Rock Rapids, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his son, David; two brothers, infant Peter and Peter Gorter and one sister, Evelyn Gorter.(
