Velma Mary Barondeau, 81, of Arkansas City, died Thursday (August 29, 2002) at her residence. The Rosary will be recited 7:00 p.m. Friday (August 30, 2002) at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A funeral service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in the Riverview Cemetery. Father John Brungardt will officiate.

Velma was born December 23, 1921 to Joy Sterling and Mary (Jacobs) Morton. She was reared and educated in Arkansas City, graduating from Arkansas City High School in 1940. She attended business college in Chilicothe, Missouri. Velma married Emil Barondeau on November 21, 1942 in Winfield. The couple made their home in Arkansas City. She was the owner and operator of the Tiny Tots Nursery School and Day Care for many years. Later, Velma added dance classes to her school. She was a longtime member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband Emil of the home; two sons Emil Barondeau, Jr. of Corpus Christi, Texas, Mike and his wife Shirley Barondeau of Arkansas City; one daughter Mary Joyce Evans of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; one sister Delores Joyce Hylton of Wichita; three grandchildren; one step-grandchild; four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters Violet Hatfield and Viola Miller.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Arrangements are being made by the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City.
