WILLIAM HANSON, PIONEER CITIZEN, DIES AT AGE OF 92
William Hanson, more familiarly known as Uncle Bill Hanson, 92 years old, a Confederate veteran and a citizen of Comanche county for 67 years, or since the first year after its organization, died at his home at Vandyke last Saturday night, December 13. Mr Hanson was born in Marion county, Alabama, October 14, 1832 and had therefore passed the ninety-second milepost on his journey here a little over two months ago.
He came to Comanche county in 1857 with his brothers, John and Jack Hanson, both of whom preceded him in death. Though having come to Texas a few years before the war of 1861, it was in Arkansas that he enlisted at the outbreak of the conflict. After the war he joined a company of Texas Rangers in Comanche county, but with Ed Carnes and Silas Puckett, was detained to remain at home to protect the homes of this section against the bands of marauding indians.
Mr. Hanson was the father of fifteen children, by three different marriages, ten of whom are living. He is survived by his wife and by sons and daughters as follows: Mrs. Eli Childress, Vandyke; Jack Hanson, Dublin; George Hanson, Proctor; Dink Streeter, Mason county; Mrs. Carl Fritts, Comanche Route 5; Mrs. Guy Carnes; Mrs. John Rloch, Deleon; Lem Hanson,Vandke; Mrs. C.A. Griffith, Vandyke; Mrs. John Malone, Deleon.
Burial was at Zion Hill cemetery at Vandyke, Sunday afternoon, with the funeral services conducted by Rev. R.B. Easley of Vandyke, minister of the Freewill Baptist church of which deceased had been a member for the last fifteen years.
LaRue Bell adds:
"This obituary on Wm. Hanson is not entirely correct. His brother John did come to Texas ca. 1857 and William might have made the trip at that time, but did not stay. He returned to Izard County, Arkansas, where his wife and children were. After his first wife died in a smallpox epidemic, he brought the children to Texas in1868. He remarried in 1869 to a widow, Elizabeth Rigsby Scott - my great grandmother."
