He was married to Viola Gibson, who was a daughter of Furnie B. & Eurralli Carlton Gibson of Augusta, GA. They made their home at 305 East Washington Avenue, Bessemer City, NC 28016. They were the parents of one son, Carl Walter Mitchem, Jr., Lowell, NC. Carl was survived by his wife, Viola, and by their son and his daughter, Toni M. Mitchem of Lowell. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Bessemer City, NC His siblings were: Lawrence Luther Mitchem 1908 - 1951 (m. Sarah Purkey); John Verdon Mitchem 1916 - 1987 (m. Margaret Hook); Dorothy Mae Mitchem 1920 - 1990 (m. Claude Guy Clark); and George Arnold Mitchem 1925 - 6/28/1995 (m. Betty Jean Cunningham and Betty Faye Fowler).
