Francis Marion was the 2nd child of John William(JW) Johnson and Sarah Elizabeth Shoemaker-Johnson. He was probably named after his uncle who was also Francis Marion. Little is known of his childhood. Marion was of slender build, blue eyes, and dark hair. Marion met Nancy Angeline Harrison and they wished to marry. However, her parents disapproved of her choice. When "Nannie" turned 21 they did marry. Marion continued working in the coal mines which may have been the objection Nancy's parents had to the marraige as they believed she was marrying "beneath her".
Marion and Nannie had eleven children, including an infant and a set of twins who either died at birth or shortly thereafter. After the twins died in 1900, they may have been divorced as there is a on record a second marraige application for Marion and Nannie who were remarried on Nov. 8, 1902.
Marion would take the children blackberry picking for Nannie and Bessie to make cobblers. As there was little money, this was quite a treat!
They always seemed to be short on dishes. It seems when Nannie was mad at Marion, she would throw dishes at him! They got some metal dishes later and afterwards they were only bent.
Marion went from the coal mines to the steel mills. His job was working in the furnace room operating Hoisting Engine #1. One day he was working up high over the hugh cauldrons of hot molten iron and slipped. He fell downward landing on a crossbeam and ruptured a kidney which had to be removed. Marion was never well after that and passed away April 17, 1917 at the age of 47(?) before his last child, Aubrey, was born. There were 8 children still at home when he died.
Marion, Nancy, and three of their babies are buried in the Bethlehem Methodist Church Cemetary in Dolomite, Alabama.

1870 Jefferson County, Alabama, Census done on July 21, 1870.
J. W. Johnson age 23 born in NC
S. E. age 18 born in AL
W. O. age 7/12 born in AL
(No listing of Francis Marion is on this census.(BKS))

1880 Jefferson County, Alabama (age 9-Apr 1871)
(This is the first census that shows Francis Marion at age 9. It is reasonable to assume by this that his birth year was 1871.(BKS))

1900 Jefferson County, Alabama (age 27-Apr 1873)
***********************************************************
1910 Jefferson County, Alabama (age 38-Apr 1872)
***********************************************************
The 1870 Census, which was taken July 21st, does not show Francis Marion. It is therefore reasonable to assume that the date of birth on his gravestone is in error. He first appears on the 1880 Census, where it lists him as being nine years of age. This places his birth year Abt 1871. However the Census's for 1900 and 1910 gives an approximate birth year of 1873 and 1872 respectively. So the true year of his birth may never be attained. As the 1880 census was reported by either his father, John Johnson, and /or his mother,Sarah, the date of 1871 could be more acceptable and Francis lost track of his own birth date over the suceeding years.
