He lived in Tridell, Utah most of his life, moving there with his father in 1906. He attended school at the Uintah Academy in Vernal. Along with his father, he operated a sawmill at Paradise Park on Mosby Mountain, from 1926 until it burned in 1940. From 1940 until 1959 he operated a sawmill in Tridell. In 1959 he moved to Salt Lake City and later to Orem and Logan. Many of the early homes in the area were built from lumber sawed at the Bartlett sawmill. He was also a finished carpenter and built caskets at his home in Tridell. He spent much of his early life in the mountains working or hunting and fishing. When the weather was too cold to operate the sawmill, he hauled lumber to the valley on a sleigh. He served an LDS mission in Northern California during the Korean War and later served two missions to the Indian people on the reservation. He was Ward Clerk in the Tridell Ward for a long period of time.
