Stella died while she was a patient at the California State Hospital, the state's first insane asylum. Apparently in February 1920 she moved from her home in El Dorado, Kansas to Bakersfield, California to be near her older son, James Harvey Dewar. While there she increasingly had problems and her son committed her on 13 May 1920.
