Girl, 6, Drowned On Parents' Farm

SHEDS – Six-year-old Patricia Ann Casolare of Sheds drowned about 2:30 p.m. yesterday in the icy waters of Tioughnioga creek on her parents' farm.

The youngster, playing with her brother, Peter, 8, plunged into the creek when thin ice gave way. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Casolare.

Sheds, a hamlet of fewer than 100 persons, is about 10 miles south of Cazenovia in Madison county.

Dr. Kenneth Hamlin, Madison county coroner, issued a verdict of accidental drowning. Dr. Hamlin, called to the scene from nearby DeRuyter, worked over the child more than half an hour in an attempt to revive her.

Patty and her brother had walked out onto the ice of the creek while their father was about 500 yards away cutting wood. State Troopers A. D. Greene and M. D. Block of Cazenovia substation said ice reached up to the shore of the 20-foot wide creek on one side. The section of the creek where they were playing serves as a swimming hole in the summer.

Peter, not seeing his sister reappear after falling thru the ice, ran for his father. Mr. Casolare spotted his daughter under the ice and waded into the water from the opposite side of the creek. Reaching under the ice he pulled her out.

Mr. Casolare applied artificial respiration to the child while Dr. Hamlin was summoned.
