The Wellington Leader August 23, 1984

Judge Lester H. Campbell, 68, of Memphis died in a two-vehicle accident near Dalhart Friday, Aug. 10, as he and his wife were enroute to Colorado on a vacation. Mrs. Campbell was seriously injured. He was a former Hall County Judge and a former Panhandle area newspaperman. Judge Campbell grew up in Wellington and was in town Friday, Aug. 3, to attend the reunion of the 1932-33-34-35 classes. He was a member of one of these [33].

According to investigating officers, the accident occurred when a passenger car, traveling south, slowed down to make a turn off the highway and a semi-trailer rig traveling behind the car, applied brakes, causing the trailer to jacknife into the north-bound lane, directly in the path of the Campbell van. Mrs. Campbell was taken to St. Anthony's Hospital, Amarillo.

Judge Campbell was born at Hollis, Okla., July 13, 1918, the son of the late L.J. and Laura Campbell. The family moved to Wellington when he was a small boy. Judge Campbell graduated from Wellington High School and received his degree in journalism from the University of Texas in Austin. He was an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked for the Memphis Democrat before becoming owner-publisher of the McLean News. Later he was
with the Shamrock radio station, and in 1958 with the Hareware Insurance Mutual Group. In 1964, he returned to Memphis and established Campbell Insurance Agency now operated by his son. A member of First United Methodist Church, he was a former chairman of the church administrative board, also past president of Memphis Lions Club, past president of the Memphis Chamber of Commerce, a former Dale Carnegie course instructor and a member of the Masonic Lodge and a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason. He and his wife, the former Martha Jane Thompson, were married Oct. 9, 1941 in Memphis.

Survivors are his wife; one son, Jay Ed Campbell and one daughter, Chris Carroll both of Memphis; one sister, Mrs. Carrie Nola Salem of Turkey, and three grandchildren.
