Henry Baldwin, Former Memphian, Dies in Amarillo

Henry Baldwin, former Memphis business man and civic leader, died in Amarillo Saturday.

Funeral services were conducted in the First Baptist Church in Memphis Monday morning at 10:30 o'clock, with Dr. David M. Gardner of Dallas officiating, assisted by Rev. C.R. Tennison. Interment was in the Fairview Cemetery, with Murphy-Spicer-Estes Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Baldwin was born in Shelby County, Texas, December 8, 1869. He was married to Betty Mitchell at Woods Post Office, Texas. Their only child is the present Mrs. Roy Leverett of Amarillo, with whom Mr. Baldwin had lived for the past two years.

Mr. Baldwin and his brother, Alvin Baldwin, were in business together at Teneha for four years. They moved to Memphis in 1909, where they were in business until 1917. Mr. Baldwin moved back to Teneha in 1917 and lived there until two years ago when he became ill.

While in Memphis he held the office of mayor and alderman. He was a director in the old Citizens' State Bank and later a stockholder in the First State Bank. He was also a director of the Memphis chamber of commerce. He was engaged in the cattle business and the cotton business for some time. He was a member of the Baptist church and the Masonic lodge.

Surviving Mr. Baldwin are his daughter, Mrs. Roy Leverett, Amarillo; five brothers, Frank Baldwin of Overton, A. Baldwin of Memphis, C. Baldwin of Lamesa, J.T. Baldwin of Wellington, and J.J. Baldwin of Teneha; one sister, Mrs. M.E. Thornton of Waxahachie; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Active pallbearers were Horace Tarver, Wendell Harrison, Sam J. Hamilton, Ollie Lee, Charley Meacham, and Zeb Moore.

Honorary pallbearers were Bill Broome, Arthur Whaley, Charles Webster, Cicero Milan, Ed Leary, F.N. Foxhall, Jeff Thompson, T.T. Harrison, W.B. DeBerry, R.H. Wherry, E.E. Walker, Dick Watson, D.A. Neeley, Frank Finch, Lee Madden, Marvin Duren, W.P. Dial, J.R. Harrell, L.H. Wherry, R.B. McMurry, George Forgey, Herbert Estes, E.P. Thompson, Don Wright, M.G. Tarver, Max King, and Jim King.

Those in charge of flowers were Mrs. Homer Tucker, Mrs. Bengy Estes, Mrs. A.L. Gailey, Miss June Power, Miss Tommye Noel, Mrs. Foster Watkins, and Mrs. Ray Childress.
