Mary Caroline Macklin was the daughter of Fanny Peck and Fred L. Macklin. She grew up in Bacon Hill, New York, in the home bought by her grandparents, Reed and Caroline (Dodd) Peck in 1871. Mary graduated from Skidmore College in 1938 with an English degree. She married Dwelle Hoag from Greenwich NY on Aug 21, 1945.

They had three children Jonathan, Christopher and Caroline. Mary was the first of her family line to leave the area of upstate NY, having long ago family ties to early Dutch NY, Scottish immigrants and Mayflower ancestors. With her husband Dwelle they traveled around the world in the early 1950's. They lived for a time in Okinawa, Germany, Hawaii and California, as he worked for USIA. Dwelle Hoag died April 25, 1975 in Dixon, CA. In 1979 Mary married an old family friend, Fred L. Talbott. Mary lived until age 77 in Dixon, California. She and Dwelle are buried in the Dixon Cemetery. There is also a memorial remembrance for Mary at the Bacon Hill Cemetery in New York State with her parents.

Mary's favorite job was as an English instructor to adult students teaching English as a second language in Dixon. She had many friends in Dixon, but always enjoyed traveling home to upstate New York. There were several summers living there again, to visit her many Peck cousins in Bacon Hill, and Dwelle's siblings nearby. There was a grand country auction of the contents of the old family home in 1995 after Mary's passing. This writer, Mary's daughter, knows Mary would have loved that auction and all the assembled friends and relatives!
