1st wife: Christina Rettie (1825-1852) married on November 15, 1849. She is buried in Laurel Grove Cemetery, Savannah, GA They had one son, Preston Cunningham

2nd wife: Mrs. Matilda (Broadfoot ) DeLara (1830-1860) married on July 25, 1857. She is buried in Laurel Grove Cemetery, Savannah, GA. They had one son, Edward Fairley cunningham.

3rd wife: Martha Isabella Gould born March 29, 1832, Harris Neck, McIntosh County, GA; married October 9, 1862 Savannah, GA and died May 5, 1912, Decatur, GA; buried Decatur Cemetery, Decatur, GA.

He was provost marshal of Savannah, who commanded the last three companies to evacuate Savannah in the face of Sherman's overwhelming army, who retreated across South Carolina to surrender while under the command of General Joseph Johnston in North Carolina. Before and after the war he was a partner in a ship chandlery and wholesale groceries with an office Factors Walk. One of his company's trading ships ('Leesburg') was seized by the Union army when taking Savannah.
In 1860 John Cunningham purchased lots in Laurel Grove Cemetery in Savannah as the burial place of seafarers "who die in this port". It was presented to the Savannah Port Authority by major Cunningham in 1897. There is a Georgia State Historical Marker titled "Sailor's Burial Ground" which marks the lots in Laurel Grove Cemetery.

Martha J Cunningham has a CSA pension application on line in the GA archives virtual vault. She says she was married to John Cunningham, who died in Dekalb County on 21 Nov, 1903. He enlisted and served in Company C of the 6th GA regiment. She applied for a pension due to blindness. There was not a marriage date or certificate to help identify which Martha she was.
