Mary E. (Hart) Kline, 94, died Jan. 22, 2003, in the emergency room at Aultman Hospital, Canton, O. She had been a resident of Hennis Nursing Home at Bolivar for two years. Mary was born Nov. 19, 1908, and was the ninth and last child of Viola and Judd Hart. She was reared in Mogadore, O., until her father died in 1916. Her mother then moved to Canton, O.
On July 2, 1927, she married Roland Kline and moved to Bolivar, where Roland and his father took up farming on his grandfather's farm, raising wheat and potatoes. Mary liked the country life, growing her own vegetables and canning for the winter. She kept busy with church activities, housework and working in the barn, cutting potatoes for planting and helping sort and bag the potatoes.
In 1953, they built a home in Bolivar. That year, the price of potatoes dropped, and they found no one wanted to buy the smaller ones. So Mary got the idea of making potato chips from a recipe she found in a cookbook. Out of this came Kline's Potato Chip Company. They started making chips in the basement of their home, but then the business grew and they built a plant in downtown Bolivar.
Mary is survived by two daughters, Jacquelyn (Tom) Roberts of Atlanta, Ga., Marcine Mullett of Bolivar, and seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1987, daughter, Sharon, in 1964, and eight brothers and a sister.
