Son of Matilda and Arthur Payton. He married Elizabeth Mathews on 5 Sep 1861 and they had five known children: Laura, Andrew, Ellen, Harriet (Hattie) and Matthew.

Following the death of Elizabeth, Morris married Hannah Beard on 30 Sep 1872. Six children were born of that marriage, four of whom were living in 1900.

The Newport Hoosier State, dated Wednesday, September 9, 1891: Morris Payton, aged 55 or 60, died on Sunday last. He was a man well respected by everyone, and had always lived in the neighborhood where he was born. His remains were interred on Monday.

1. To my wife Hannah M. Payton, I bequeath all my real estate so long as she shall live. At her death, it shall be divided among all my children or their heirs.
2. I have paid my brother Harrison Payton, for his share of lands from Arthur Payton. The bequests to Emily Harper have been paid.
3. Upon the death of my mother Matilda Payton, my estate shall owe my sister Permelia Payton $600.
4. I appoint William F. Kerns Executor.



Based upon the news article, it is possible that Morris died on 6 Sep 1891 rather than the 11th as reflected on the stone.
