Son of Elizabeth Mathews and Morris Payton. He married Katie D. Vice on 2 Jul 1891 in Douglas County, Illinois. Three known children were born of that union.

A second marriage was on 7 Sep 1945 when he wed widow Mary Rebecca Canaday (nee Downs). His bride passed away on 8 Mar 1949 and is buried with her first husband.

Following is obituary from The Terre Haute Tribune, February 11, 1951.

Matt Payton, 79 years old, R.R. 1, died at the Vermillion County Nursing Home at 5 o’clock Saturday morning following several weeks’ illness. He was a life-long resident of Vermillion county. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Oakie Davis of Indianapolis and Mrs. Kathleen Salisbury of Terre Haute; a son, Paul, of Pasadena Calif,; a half-brother, Ross Payton, of Webster City Iowa, and two half-sisters, Mrs. Maude Jones of Bridger, Mont., and Mrs. Orah Fletcher of Chicago, Ill. The body was taken to the Frist Funeral Home where services will be held at 10 o’clock Monday morning. Burial will be in Helt’s Prairie Cemetery.
