Jessy Jane was the 14-year-old daughter of Alexander Seton, Esq., of Aberdeenshire, Scotland, and the former Janet Skene Ogilvy. Born in Scotland, she was the 5th of the couple's six children, only two of whom survived to adulthood. Predeceased by her siblings Ann, James, and William, Jessy Jane died in Livorno six months short of her 15th birthday. Her survivors included her parents, her sister Isabella, and her brother Alexander, who, many years later, as Lieutenant Colonel of the 74th Highlanders, would be revered for his heroic self-sacrifice at the sinking of the H.M.S. Birkenhead off the Cape of Good Hope.
