Alonzo F Brown emigrated to Oregon 1859 and this same year was employed by D.W. Stearns on his farm near Elkton. He rented the Thomas Owens farm in 1860-61 now the present site of Roseburg. From 1861-64 he ran pack trains to the Idaho mines. He purchased the John H. Medley donation land claim in 1865 on the Calapooia Creek 3 miles below old Oakland. In 1871 he bought the DLC's of Reason Reed and Leonard Crow and laid out the present town of Oakland in 1872. This made it possible for the city to have access to the new O&C Railroad. By 1905 he owned an estimated 6,000 acres. He married Ada Lamkin in Massachusetts in 1854. She died in 1888. His second wife was Addie Smith born in Illinois in 1862 and she died in 1938. Alonzo died in 1937. They are all buried in the Oakland Historic Cemetery along with their children. Edger L.. Brown, died at 3 years of age in 1861 and this is the oldest marked grave in the cemetery.
Brown's home was built in 1888 and is at the end of 2nd and Chestnut Streets in Oakland Oregon.
