Pharmacist and Botanist Joseph Edward Harned graduated Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science and owned a drugstore in Oakland, Maryland. As a boy Joseph enjoyed walking in the woods in The Alleghany Mountains where he developed a fascination of wild flowers. He eventually wrote a book entitled "Wildflowers of the Alleghanies" and his book won him nation-wide recognition and honorary degree of Doctor of Science from West Virginia Wesleyan and Western Maryland Colleges.
