He was graduated from Cornell College, Mount Vernon, Iowa (20 June 1879) and for 17 years was a school teacher. At the age of 39 he decided to be a homesteader and filed on a timber claim near Bazile Mills. After proving up on the claim he came to Norfolk in the 1890's where for seven years he operated the first horse-drawn bus on this city's streets. After retiring from the teaching profession because the pay wasn't enough, he became a sign painter and cabinet maker, a profession he followed for many years. He was a Quaker and often preached that faith, having a fine knowledge of the Bible. His favorite verse was Rev 3:30.
