He was born on April 20, 1923 to Elizabeth Fuqua and Samuel Rogers Denney of Milan, Tennessee. He graduated with honors from Milan High School before attending South-western at Memphis. He interrupted his education to serve as an aviator in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After his military service, Dr. Denney continued his education at the University of Virginia, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He graduated from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and completed his general surgery residency at Kennedy Veterans Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
Dr. Denney married Carol Ann Catching of Hazlehurst, Mississippi. They reared a family of five children and had been married 53 years at the time of her death on December 4, 2008.
Dr. Denney was a compassionate physician and practiced for 45 years in North Mississippi and West Tennessee. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Memphis and sought to serve the Lord in all he did. Dr. Denney was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and will be greatly missed by his family.
Dr. Denney was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth and Sam Denney, his brother, David Denney, M.D., and his wife, Carol Denney.
He is survived by his children, Sam Joseph Denney, Jr., M.D. of Jackson, Mississippi, Beth Denney Higginbotham of Memphis, Tennessee, Ann Denney Kelly of Jackson, Mississippi, William David Denney, M.D. of Nashville, Tennessee, and Bruce Ainsworth Denney, D.D.S. of Southaven, Mississippi and their spouses. Dr. Denney also is survived by 14 grandchildren and a nephew, David Denney of Atlanta, Georgia.
Funeral services were held on December 31, 2009 at First Baptist Church, Milan, Tennessee. The family requests memorials be directed to St. Jude Children´s Research Hospital or charity of the donor´s choice. Bodkin Funeral Home had charge. (Milan Mirror-Exchange, 5 Jan 2010, p. 4)
