James married Phodie LaFaye BASINGER on 23 Dec 1940, Red River Parish LA. The had four children: Leta Faye, James Michael, Linda Susan & Rebecca Ann LESHE.

He was in the US Navy Seabees during World War II and worked as a welding instructor at the Bienville Parish Trade School.
