A memorial service for Atherton Macondray Phleger, prominent San Francisco attorney, will be held tomorrow. Mr. Phleger died on Sunday at his San Francisco home at the age of 62.

A senior partner in the firm of Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison, Mr. Phleger specialized in business, securities, estate and litigation practice.

He was also a special bank counsel in several innovative syndicated lending transactions and was counsel to underwriters and issuers in many public offerings.

Mr. Phleger was a director, since 1971, of Wells Fargo & Co. and of Wells Fargo Bank; a director of the Children's Hospital of San Francisco; a former director of Almaden Vineyards; a trustee of the Bancroft Library at the University of California and a trustee of the William G. Irwin Charity Foundation.

He was involved in numerous pro bono, or without charge, activities for the needy.

In addition to membership in the city, state and national bar associations, Mr. Phleger was a member of the Pacific Union Club and the Bohemian Club and a member and governor of the Burlingame Country Club.

A native of San Francisco, Mr. Phleger was a graduate of Palo Alto High School. He served in the Marine Corps from 1943 to 1946 and then entered Stanford University, where he earned three letters as a tackle on the football team before his graduation in 1949.

He earned his degree from Harvard Law School in 1952 and entered practice in San Francisco the next year.

Mr. Phleger is survived by his wife, Jean, of San Francisco; six children, Michael, Peter, Cameron, Mary and Mariana Phleger, all of San Francisco, and Elena McHenry of Los Angeles; his mother, Mary, of Woodside; a sister, Mary Goodan of Pasadena, and two grandchildren.

Tomorrow's memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. at Grace Cathedral. Donations are preferred to Burt Children's Center, 940 Grove Street, San Francisco 94117.
