Anne Phleger Gates, 58
A memorial service is scheduled Friday for Anne Phleger Gates, 58, who died last week after suffering a stroke while on a trek in India's Himalayan protectorate of Sikkim.
Mrs. Gates' husband, Milo (Ned) Gates, is president of Swinerton & Walberg Co., a construction firm headquartered in downtown San Francisco.
Her father, the late Herman Phleger, was an attorney and a founder of the San Francisco law firm of Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison.
Mrs. Gates, a fifth generation Californian, was reared in Woodside and was a graduate of Stanford University. She was active in numerous San Francisco groups, including the Friends of the San Francisco Public Library, the Schools of the Sacred Heart, the Filoli Center and the vestry of St. Luke's Episcopal Church.
Besides her husband, she is survived by her mother, Mrs. Herman Phleger, and a brother, Atherton Phleger, both of San Francisco; a sister, Mrs. William Goodan of Pasadena, and five children, Virginia Lewis, Mariquita Gates and Milo Gates Jr., all of San Francisco, Elena Motlow of Baltimore and Susan Gates of New York City.
Friday's service will be held at 11 a.m. in St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Van Ness Avenue and Clay Street, San Francisco. Donations are requested to the Friends of the Public Library, Main Library, Civic Center, San Francisco 94102 or to any other organization in which Mrs. Gates was active.
