Aaron Hinckley (son of Stalham) enlisted as a private in Company. H of the 14th Vermont Infantry (a 9 month regiment) in Rutland on 10 September 1862 with his nephew William Hinckley (son of Elijah). He was listed as 33 years of age, 5' 10" tall, light complexion, blue eyes and light hair. He was also shown as being born in Rutland with an occupation of farmer. He mustered into service on 21 October 1862 in Brattleboro, and was listed as present from October 1862 thru April 1863. On 19 April 1863 he was detached and assigned as a brigade wagoneer. He was mustered out of service on 30 July 1863 in Brattleboro. He was at Gettysburg with his nephew William who was in the same unit. His brother Edward and brother-in-law Dean Wilder Reed, both of the 1st Vermont Cavalry, were also at Gettysburg. Aaron served in the following engagements: Fairfax Court House, Virginia and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. After the war, Aaron also returned to Rutland where he lived the remainder of his life. He worked at the C.V. Railroad shop in Rutland and lived at 28 Granger Street. He was an active member of the Rutland G.A.R. post and died of a stroke on 12 March 1891. He is buried in the Cavalry Catholic Cemetery, located in Rutland, with his wife and youngest son.
