Obituary in THE BUTLER HERALD, Taylor County Georgia, Thursday, August 3, 1933

Mr. C.M. Bartlett Succumbs to Short Illness - Deceased Was One of Butler's Most Prominent Citizens, Leading Merchants and Upstanding Churchman; His Passing Mourned by All

Funeral services the largest attended here in a long while, were held Sunday morning at 10 o'clock at Bethel Primitive Baptist Church for Mr. Charles Madison Bartlett, was succumbed at his residence in Butler Friday evening, seven o'clock, following an illness of about six weeks, his illness being attributed to complications.

In the passing of Mr. Bartlett, Butler, Taylor county and Georgia as a whole have lost a man of most sterling character and a citizen whose place will be very hard to fill. But none will miss him more than those of his immediate family where he was honored, loved and respected as but few men and which devotion was fully reciprocated by him to each member of his charming household.

Mr. Bartlett was numbered among the most upright citizens and business men of Butler and conducted a mercantile business here for the past twenty-five years that was most creditable both to himself and to his city. In addition thereto he operated one of the best farms in this section. He was always active in the best interest of his town, county and state. His devotion to his church and every influence for good in the community were among his particular characteristics.

Mr. Bartlett was born in Chattahoochee county, December 28, 1862, the son of the late Mr. William Archie Bartlett and Mrs. Ruth Hall Bartlett, in the prime of his young manhood he was happily married to Miss Lena Rhodes, of this county and who departed this life in 1923. A little more than a year later Mr. Bartlett married Mollie Rhodes, a sister of his former devoted companion, who survives him. Of the first union there are left to mourn his passing two charming daughters and three most splendid sons, to wit: Mrs. H. J. Brooks, of Thomaston and Miss Jewel Bartlett, of Butler; Mr. J.E. Bartlett of Thomaston; Mr. V.A. Bartlett of Washington, D.C. and Mr. Warren Bartlett of this county. Other surviving near relatives are his three brothers, Messrs. George Bartlett, of Osierfield, Ga.; W.A. Bartlett of West Point; and C.O. Bartlett of Sylvester; also two sisters, Mrs. H.A. Childs, of Butler and Mrs. Julia Foster, of Mauk.

Mr. Bartlett moved from Marion to Taylor county about fifty years ago when he invested in some of the best lands in this section becoming actively identified in farming in which he was successful and later establishing a large mercantile business in this city, the latter enterprise too, being a very satisfactory venture both to himself and his many customers.

The funeral service Sunday morning at Bethel church, of which Mr. Bartlett was an active member was conducted by Elder S.H. McCorkle, pastor of the church, assisted by Hon. J.T. Childs.

Interment of the remains were in the cemetery near by with the following acting as pall bearers: Active Messrs. Emmet Wilson, M.R. Williamson, H.B. Walker, H.E. Allen, J. R. Wilson and Bussey Childs. Honorary, Messrs. J.T. Childs, C.T. McLendon, J.H. West and J. J. Windham.

The many beautiful flowers sent by friends of the family and the large number attending the funeral, many coming from a distance, attested the love and esteem this good man was held by those who knew him. The deepest sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved family.

Note: Joined Bethel Church by letter, August 6, 1881. Served as church clerk from August 20, 1927 until September 19, 1931.
