David D. Miller was the first child to be born in America after his parents immigrated from Alsace Lorraine in France in 1818. There are a few articles about David's Miller family written by Neil Ann Stuckey Levine in the Amish Mennonite Heritage publication beginning with the July 1994 issue. There are questions about David's birth date. This date is closest to being correct. Dec. 30, 1819 would be a good alternate date. Click on tombstone picture for more details.

The 1850 census shows the Miller Family in Hopewell Twp. Mercer Co. Ohio. They may have moved to Michigan for a time before they moved to Lagrange County, Indiana in March 1857. In August, 1858, they settled in Tippecanoe Twp., Kosciusko Co., Indiana along the eastern shore of Webster Lake where Millers Landing is today.

Some family members thought David D. Miller did not enlist in the Civil War and some said he did. Neighbors, siblings Ed & Minnie Upson, said he died from injuries and sickness from the war. Searches for the correct David D. Miller serving in the Civil War have not yet been successful.

David is buried beside his children Emma, Samuel and Sarah. Emma & Sarah's stones still stand. The mystery of the plot has been why are David O. & Elizabeth Miller buried on the same plot? Who were they? It now appears certain that the two David Millers were not at all related. See memorial for David O. Miller for explanation.

Sophia is most likely buried next to David D. Miller. Her daughter Maria Mock said she was buried at Salem and that her parents had two separate stones. Warren Mock wrote that his grandfather, Noah Mock and wife to Maria, bought the tombstones. If so, this was likely at the time of Sophia's death between 1876-1878. Noah married their daughter Marie in March 1876. No stone is visible for Sophia now and is appears to have been gone for decades now.

The children of David and Sophia were: Mary Ann 1847-1929. John E. 1848-1911. Jacob 1851-1888. Elizabeth "Eliza" 1853-1915. Joseph David 1856-1924. Eli 1857-1897. Maria Elizabeth 1860-1936. Emma B. 1863-1864. Samuel E. 1865-1865. Sarah Ann 1865-1865. Twin to Samuel.

David's Father was Jacob Mueller Born 1779 in LaBroque Vosges, Bas-Rhin France. Marriage to Marie Bechler 01/04/1813 Badonwiller France. In 1818 Immigrated to Pennsylvania. After October 1819 they went to Ohio and were in Green Twp., Wayne Co. OH. prior to 1823. Jacob Mueller died before 1872. His brother, Andreas, died in 1872 and his will includes his siblings and/or their children. David D. Miller's children are in the will of Andreas Miller.
David D. Miller's mother was Marie Bechler Born 1787 Alsace, France. Death was probably in Ohio but date is unknown.
