Janette, also called "Jessie", was born to William and Janet Mitchell in Abdie Parish, Fifeshire, Scotland. She came with her parents, brother Thomas, and sisters, Maggie and Isabella to America by sailing vessel in 1856. The family settled in a Scottish community of farmers in Bristol (Yorkville), Illinois. Janet married Romilious Hiddleson. She joined the Yorkville Baptist Church in about 1879. Toward the end of her life she was a member of the Ladies Aid of the Congregational Church. She was a charter member of the Rebekeh Lodge No. 251 and a member of the Mystic Workers of the World No. 25. Jessie worked as a nurse for many years. In the fall of 1899 she became ill and "out of her mind" and was a source of consant anxiety and care to her husband (according to her obituary). She died at St. Charles Hospital, Aurora, Illinois in 1910.
