They resided in Cook County, IL for many years. Alice died in August 1882. She is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery Indianapolis, Indiana, Marion County Plot 31 251. NLColes searched the area to take a photo and reported there are several unmarked graves around JD's.

He next married Elizabeth Elliott Middleton (born in Pennsylvania). They had 2 daughters, Ruth Elizabeth Kershaw and Marry Middleton Kershaw of Cook County Illinois. Elizabeth died on September 11, 1897 and is buried in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Newville, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. The daughters were raised by their unmarried maternal Aunt; Nancy Middleton in Chicago, IL. The 1900 Chicago Census lists

JDs last marriage was to Emma C Deatrick on September 25, 1899 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania. Emma was also born in Pennsylvania. JD and Emma were living in Brazil, Clay County, Indiana in June 1900. They had been married only 11 months when JD passed away from Brights disease (kidney).

Joshua Dawson Kershaw, late philanthropist, civic leader and member of the Chicago board of education, introduced manual training into the school system, the first classes being offered in the school named for him. He donated the land for the school and founded Englewood and Emerald Avenue Presbyterian churches, and a Chinese Mission in Chicago.

Joshua Dawson Kershaw had been one of the first settlers of Normal Park in Cook County, IL. He had been a member of the Chicago board of Education and donated the site of the Joshua D. Kershaw Elementary School at 6450 Lowe Ave., Chicago IL. The school was built in 1890 and is still open to this day.

Joshua Kershaw was my great, great grandfather. I descend from his son: Walter Johnson Kershaw
