Mary and her sister Ruth were raised by their aunt (Nancy Middleton) in Chicago, Illinois after their mother died in 1897. Their father died in 1900.

Mary K. Ormsbee dies; member prominent Chicago family
A resident of River Forest longer than 40 years, Mary Middleton Kershaw Ormsbee of 314 Gale, died July 5.
She was born on Chicago's southside where members of her family were pioneers in Englewood. Her father, Joshua Dawson Kershaw, late philanthropist, civic leader and member of the Chicago board of education, introduced manual training into the school system, the first classes being offered in the school named for him. He donated the land for the school and founded Englewood and Emerald Avenue Presbyterian churches, and a Chinese Mission in Chicago.
Mrs. Ormsbee was a direct descendent of Arthur Middleton, a signer of the independence. She attended Mrs. Barrow's Private School for Girls, the Kershaw school, Englewood high school and the University of Chicago.
Interested in athletics all her life, she won her "07" from Englewood high, considered a rarity in those days.
Mrs. Ormsbee sang in the May Festival of the 1900's in the Auditorium, an event that grew into the Chicagoland Music Festival.
She belonged to Phi Gamma Zeta sorority, Elmhurst Women's auxiliary, Paulina Circle of River Forest Presbyterian church, and Maywood Garden club.
Mrs. Ormsbee presented 1963 graduation awards at the Kershaw school as was her father's custom. She dedicated the second school bearing her father's name and presented it with an oil portrait of him. Mayor Daly, school board members and school principals attended the ceremony.
She was married in 1915 to the late James E. Ormsbee. Two daughters, Mary and Betty Survive.
