Doctor Killed in Auto Crash Wed. Morning
A prominent Indianapolis physician was killed and six other persons were injured, two of them critically, early Tuesday morning in a two car head-on collision, about three miles north of Laytonville, which was one of the worst Redwood Highway Accidents in recent years.
Dead is Dr. Sidney J. Hatfield, 66, of Indianapolis, Indiana, as a result of the wreck, while injured and in Howard Memorial Hospital here is his widow and Mrs. Mary B. Rawlings, 49, of Redondo Beach, both considered in a serious condition, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank B. Love of Indianapolis. Guy K. Rawlings, 51, husband of the critically injured woman, and Mrs. Emma Metcalf of Portland, Oregon.
The tragic accident occurred, according to Highway Patrolman Fred Hamilton, who investigated, when Mrs. Rawlings, who was driving one of the cars, which was traveling south, dozed at the wheel and the vehicle veered over on the wrong side of the pavement to crash headon into the oncoming car, which was occupied by the Hatfields and Mr. and Mrs. Love. Mrs. Rawlings was cited by Patrolman Hamilton for the cause of the accident in which a death and injuries resulted.
Two of the injured tourists were rushed to the hospital here by a Sonoma County ambulance which happened along at the scene of the crash shortly after it occurred. Dr. Raymond Babcock, who was summoned to the scene, brought two of the other injured persons to the hospital, while the Willits ambulance transported two more of the six victims to the hospital.
The wreck took place on a straight stretch of highway shortly after seven o'clock Tuesday morning. Both the cars were demolished. Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Elliott and Ed Downing of Laytonville, and Deputy Coroner Crawford of Ukiah assisted at the scene by directing traffic around the wreck and administering first aid to some of the injured.
Dr. Hatfield's body is at the Anker Mortuary where it has been prepared for shipment to Indianapolis, A son of Dr. Hatfield's was reported to the coming here by plane last night.
