Levi Sanford Gambold was the second of eight known children of John Christian Gambold (1805-1870) and Anna (went by Nancy) Swaim (1807-1856), who married 19 Feb 1828 at Stokes (now Forsyth?) County, North Carolina. The family moved to Indiana in 1834. In 1850 the family (including Levi) were living at Clay Township, Hendricks County, Indiana. In 1856 the family moved to Minnesota, with Anna dying on the roadside while the family was traveling through Delaware County, Iowa. It is not known where she is buried. The family returned to Indiana from Minnesota in 1859.

Levi married Hannah Emmeline Robinson (1834-1922) on 14 Dec 1853 at Putnam County, Indiana. Levi and Hannah were the parents of six known children, namely:

1. Mary Alice Gambold Smith (1855-1944)
2. Laura Gambold (1856-c1860/70)
3. John Sylvester Gambold (1857-1898)
4. William H. Gambold (1861-1909)
5. Omer (Homer?) H. Gambold (1867-1893)
6. Frederick "Fred" Alvin Gambold (1868-1939)

Levi was a Union Civil War Veteran. In 1860 the family was living at Putnam County, Indiana. In 1870 the family (parents, Mary, and last four children) were living at Clay Township, Hendricks County, Indiana. In 1880 Levi (a carpenter), Hannah, John S. (age 22, a brakeman on the railroad), William (age 18), Omer (age 13) and Freddie (age 10) were living at Coatsville, Hendricks County, Indiana. In the late 1880s the family was living at Indianapolis. In 1910 the parents were said to be living at San Antonio, but I can't find them. In 1900 Levi was living with his daughter Mary Gambold Smith in San Antonio. In 1900 Hannah (hard to read, listed as widowed? or married?; mother of seven, three living) and son William were living at Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana. Thus one child is missing from the above listing.

Links to Levi's father, wife, five of his six known children and six of his seven known siblings are included below.
