John J Carriger was a native Hoosier born in Boone County near Jamestown on 5 May 1843. His parents,George Miles and Sarah Delaney George Carriger were from Tennessee and moved to Indiana in 1838.His father was a pioneer of Boone County carving out farmland from the wilderness.Eventually,he developed 700 acres.
John's father farmed during the summer months and taught school in the winter.He attended this log cabin school during his childhood.
On 10 October 1861,he enlisted in the 40th Indiana Regiment Co F with his brother Godfrey M. He held the rank of Corporal. While in camp at Lafayette, he became ill with measles and returned home to recuperate. He rejoined his unit in Bardstown,Ky. and served continuously for three years and two months.
His service included the battle of Shiloh , Coronth, Miss.Perryville, Ky. ,Standford Ky. ,Silver Springs, Stone River and numerous other engagements.His regiment was foremost at the Battle of Chattanooga.Out of 125 days--97 were passed under fire.
Besides engagements already noted there were: Devil' Back Bone, Rosaca,New Hope Church,Kenesaw Mt. ,Marietta,Peach Tree Creek,Atlanta ,Jonesboro and serving through Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee campaigns.
He was never wounded but had several narrow escapes.His brother Godfrey became ill in Corinth,Miss.and died at age21 in a military hospital in Evansville Ind.
He was released from active duty on 9 Dec 1864 and returned home to work with his father on the farm for a year as well as trading horses . He also became involved with general trading in stock ,grain and lumber .He expanded that venture to shipping 600-700 cars annually.
He married Sarah Neff on 30 Nov 1865 and they had three sons,Theodore Morton ,Harry, Charles Edward ;twin daughters Gertrude and Myrtle and daughter Grace.
He was very interested in the insurance business and in 1883 began a new career in real estate and was very successful. During his life,he was active in many organizations to better the city.He was a member of the real estate committee and charter member of the Board of Trade.He was a member of the Union Veterans League and A.O.U.W,holding offices in all positions of Lodge 45.
John was a staunch supporter of Republican principles. He died at home in Marion Co after an illness of several years.He was preceded in death by son Harry and daughter Myrtle.He was buried in Crown Hill Cemetery , Indianapolis,Marion Co.Indiana.
