The Indianapolis Star, Saturday, June 21, 1903, page 14: THE LATE DR. EVERTS, STUDENT AND AUTHOR. His Work, “Giles & Co.,” First Work Published by Old Bowen-Steward Co.

Dr. Orpheus Everts, who was superintendent of the Central Hospital for the Insane for sixteen years, and whose death occurred in Cincinnati yesterday, was the first man for whom the predecessor of the Bobbs-Merrill company published a book. Dr. Everts was a student, poet, painter and thinker. His life was quiet, but he always carried his intellectuality into all his works, and even his annual reports as superintendent of the hospital here and at Cincinnati were recognized for literary merit.

Dr. Everts gave much thought to sociological questions and his thought found expression in a book which he named “Giles & Co.” This was a piece of fiction in which he studied the progress and effect of civilization. “Giles” was a millionaire and through him and his family and friends – the “Company” – Dr. Everts expressed his arguments against the sordid life. The book was published by Bowen, Stewart & Co. in 1878, and was the first literary work published by that firm. The publication was largely for private circulation, though copies were placed on sale.

While twenty-five years ago this firm found it difficult to publish one book, its successor only recently announced fourteen books at one time. [Provided by Mark Wirey and Cathea Curry, via email April 16, 2016].Born at Salem Settlement, Union Co, Ind
